What people are saying…
You are always my first choice when it comes to into-English translation. I consider you an outstanding translator, Elise, and I completely share your views on “the translator’s task”. One of the major challenges we regularly face is working with translators that do not really understand what the content is about, and therefore do not have the freedom to distance themselves from the text to explain its meaning in the target language. They work mostly on a syntactical level rather than a semantic level, paying too much attention to form and not substance and therefore the translated version is often literal and meaningless. That, coupled with excessive segmentation driven by the tools (Trados), inability to discern correct use of terminology (glossary) in context, inadequacy of register and tone, excruciating timeframes, etc. is a recipe for either mediocrity or complete nonsense. That is certainly not your case. In the translations you have done for us (that I have read) I’ve always appreciated that you give priority to content rather than form (even though form is impeccable) and manage to convey the meaning effectively with accuracy, appropriateness and adequacy in tone and register . This, for me, is very important and valuable.
